American Freedom Train
Power Car #200
The Bunk Car

Despite the noisy generators running 24 hours a day, #200 also had sleeping accommodations for 12(!) and served as home to some of the crew and was commonly referred to as the "Bunk Car". A former NYC 9100 series cars manufactured by ACF. Sold to the National Museums of Canada for their Discovery Train. In 1983 it was purchased by the Union Pacific Railroad and in 1986 was refurbished to be power cars for the UP's yellow business/excursion trains as UP 205.

Originally NYC baggage car #91??. Scrapped in ~2008 at Cheyenne, WY.

Please email if you have any additional information.

Photographed at Minneapolis.

Shown at Pittsburgh, PA July 1976.

One end of the car held two Detroit Diesel 12 v 71 generators. The other end held a bunk room that slept 12 in stationary bunks, plus a bath and a shower. Residents of the car, tired of not having a view of the scenery, began cutting windows into the car, four of which can be seen on the left end above the red stripe in this late 1976 view.

Heavily modified to begin with, AFT power/bunk car #200 became Union Pacific #205 - with new trucks, car ends, and vents.

While on the AFT this car was actually home to some of the AFT staff -- with its huge -- and noisy -- generators running 24 hours a day!
