Freedom Train The T-1 locomotive picked up an auxiliary tender/tool car by the time it reached Selkirk, NY (on the way to Rochester), a short time into the AFT's journey. The tender originally came from a New York Central 4-8-2 Mohawk locomotive. According to Fritz Milhaupt's research, it came from NYC L-3b #3042. The aux tender provided extra water to the locomotive to extend its endurance. The former coal bunker was covered over and became a tool shop. Following the AFT, the T-1 locomotive and this tender were used for the Chessie Steam Specials. A roundhouse fire damaged the locomotive and both of its tenders. The aux tender was not restored and is now in the collection of the the National New York Central Railroad Museum as RGSX 3001. At right: The AFT's auxiliary water tender/tool car in 2003. According to a posting by Nathan with the National New York Central Railroad Museum, "When locomotive 3042 was retired, the tender was saved for non-revenue duty by the New York Central, and it became essentially a large diesel fuel tank car retaining the shape of a steam tender. It survived in this modified way in company service into the Penn Central era, when it was relegated (numbered X26168) to a far off corner of the Van Wert, Ohio, railroad yard until purchased by Mr. Ross E.
