4449 as Santa

Pomona, CA -- December 1975

The AFT is on display at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds December 23-30. With one year left to go on its historic trek, the foundation throws a party for the crew.

The locomotive is dressed as Santa. Head of security John Manning is too as he arrives by helicopter and greets schoolchildren visiting the train.

In 1947, the mayor of Los Angeles personally (and literally) threw the switch welcoming the original Freedom Train into the city.

In 1975, the switch is thrown the other way.

The mayor decides the lofty $2 price of admission is too much to ask Los Angelenos to pay to see things they could simply go to Washington and see for free!

Though the American Freedom Train spends considerable time in the LA area, it never displays within the city limits of Los Angeles.
