According to
the magazine, previous recipients of the Golden Spike Award included
Debbie Reynolds (whose father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad),
Walt Disney and Johnny Cash. The City of Anaheim itself later won
the award in 1983.
Falcon was an
early supporter of the National Association of Railroad Passengers
(NARP). So much so that the Golden Spike Award eventually became
an NARP award -- one that is still awarded each year to people who
make significant contributions to the preservation and improvement
of passenger railroading in America.
More on the
history of the George Falcon Golden Spike Award can be found at
the NARP
website.
