Patrick Martin has modeled the entire American Freedom Train in HO scale. The work is all his own work; while most folks get a hand with one or two cars, this is all Patrick.

Patrick quietly debuted the model at Trainfest in Milwaukee November 8 & 9, 2008 -- quite a ways from his Illinois home. It wasn't more than a couple days before a YouTube video showed up featuring his model -- and news about it spread fast.

Here are some photos of his work and some notes on his approach...

AFT Car 200

Based on a Lionel AFT showcase car with two of the large windows filled in and the third filled in with grillwork.

(The editor's favorite. And a clever use of a showcase car.)

Here's how 200 came together from a showcase car.

Two of the openings on each side were filled in with styrene, backed with I-beams, and the seams filled with Squadron Green Putty and sanded smooth.

AFT Car 206

Admittedly a fantasy car, Patrick isn't the first to create an AFT dome! He used a Con-Cor 72' dome, in keeping with the length of most of the other cars on the train.

(Actually, a dome car does show up in a concept painting for the real train, so this isn't too far off base.)

AFT T-1 and aux tender

A Precision Craft T-1 model. Aux tender is a Rivarossi tender with decals made from Microscale red and white stripes, Walthers white stars and Woodland Scenics numbers.

Note that the T-1 did not need a helper to pull the entire train!
