John
hails from Wisconsin. He has taken to modeling the American Freedom
Train in HO scale and has graciously agreed to share with us images
and notes of his progress. It is still very much a work in progress,
so check back every month or so to see what's new. John is basing
much of his model on the Lionel AFT cars from the 1970's. Click

Ripp's update April 4, 2007:
The
flats are from Athearn.
They are the new ready-to-roll flats that come decorated with semi
trailers. They are a scale 85' long, and make a relatively good
cosmetic starting point for the prototype. The side sills are a
little different, but I can live with it.
The cars were
stripped of their original paint, then primered and painted with
Polyscale acrylic primer and white. The stripes on these cars
will not be painted as masking them would cause worlds to collide.
I will settle for decals on these cars. My sanity is at stake.

The wagons
are the first loads to be started. They are Roco
military vehicles and I got them at a flea market in a plastic
bag. I have no idea of numbers for them or what they even refer
to them as. I liked them because they make a good starting point
for the four wagons that had the drop floor style of the tickets,
concessions , and storage wagons that were on the train.
Building the
underframes is, to say the least, tedious.
The wagons
have 'Ringling' type undergear and if you want it that way, you
have to build it yourself. I want it that way so I'm going about
it rather slowly, learning as I go.
Having
seen Ringling Bros. wagon undergear up close I have a good idea
of what they should look like. The scale might be off, but the overall
look should compensate.
The
four white objects are the wheel brackets you see when looking at
the side of the wagon, they are part of the undergear subassembly.

Starting work
on Concessions Car, AFT #20 -- another Johnny Ripp commission
for John Finnin.
AFT
#20 - Would have been the tool car for the T-1 locomotive, but concessions
took over. Had a washer and dryer inside!
